In the run up to Human Rights Day on 10th December, we posted a series which highlight some of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that Baale Mane works towards. The SDGS are a series of goals set by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that aim to tackle the pressing human rights issues that challenge the world today. The Baale Mane girls did a drawing and poster making session with a theme of the 4 rights that we focused upon: Zero Hunger, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education and Gender Equality.

Zero Hunger

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

In 2019, 144 million children under the age of 5 were stunted, and 47 million were affected by wasting. At Baale Mane food and nutrition is a core part of our programmes. The girls eat healthy, nutritious meals that include milk, vegetables, dairy and eggs to form a well balanced diet.

Good Heath and Wellbeing

Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have.

5.4 million children die before their fifth birthday birthday each year. At Baale Mane, the girls have a holisitic approach to health. They eat nutritious meals, exercise regularly, take walks, meditate and do yoga.

Quality Education

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world - Nelson Mandela

103 million youth worldwide lack basic literacy skills, and more than 60% of these are women. Over 200 million children will still be out of school in 2030. At Baale Mane quality education is a cornerstone of our programmes. The girls go to English and Kannada medium schools. They also have supplementary education sessions and classes in English, Math, Computers, and Science. When they go to college or university, the girls also learn financial literacy, job readiness and life skills.

Gender Equality

“No country can every truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contribution of half its citizens” - Michelle Obama

In 2019, women only held 28% of managerial positions worldwide. At Baale Mane, we have a rights’ based approach to child care. The girls learn child, girls, women’s rights and a better understanding gender issues, empowering them to speak up for their rights in their futures. We aim to to equip the girls to lead a self-sustaining life as strong, empowered women.
